To honor those in our communities who have made a difference and served as leaders for today’s athletes, Fellowship of Christian Athletes hosted the Night of Champions on June 13th in Bernalillo, New Mexico.
The main event of the night was the induction of Don Chalmers into the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Hall of Champions. The FCA Hall of Champions was established in 1991 to honor individuals who have demonstrated a consistent commitment to Jesus Christ through the ministry of FCA. They are considered volunteer “All-Stars” who have given above and beyond the call of duty while upholding the four core values of FCA: Integrity, Serving, Teamwork, and Excellence.
Monty Gavin, New Mexico’s first State FCA Director, was also honored at the banquet for his 18 years of service through FCA.
`Other honorees of the night included Darren Kelley from Clovis, Kenny Pittman from Roswell, Ernie Garcia from Los Lunas, and Wes and Cammie LaPlatt from Aztec. All of these individuals received appreciation awards for their many years of service to FCA, all of whom have been leaders for FCA in their communities for 15 or more years.
Keynote speakers of the night included Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ President Coach Les Steckel, along with former University of Oklahoma Quarterback and U.S. Congressman, JC Watts. Coach Steckel had the honor of knowing Don Chalmers through many FCA events held throughout the years of Chalmers’ involvement and service with FCA. Coach Steckel shared his experience with Chalmers and how much impact he made throughout his community, and most of all, Chalmers’ heart for Christ.
JC Watts shared his experiences within the world of athletics and politics, while highlighting the importance of coaches and their vital role in today’s society. As a young athlete, Watts had a coach who made a large impact in his life and pushed him to become an All-Star athlete. Watts is also a member of the FCA Hall of Champions, in which he was inducted in 1997.
Thank you to the sponsors and to all who joined us on this very special evening to honor those who serve our community through FCA.
